But really, women’s watches have been a staple of the horological world since the late 1800s, when the first wrist watches were created for aristocratic women.

In the past century and a half, what has happened to make men’s watches the predominant driver of timepiece sales and marketing? And what does the future of women’s wrist wear look like in 2025 and beyond? Our expert team at Avi & Co. weighs in.

    The Origins of Women’s Watches

It is true: Wrist watches were first designed for women in the late 19th century. These early wrist watches were exceptionally decorative and often looked more like intricate bracelets and jewelry than the timepieces we envision today.

  9. Audemars Piguet Royal Oak with Blue Dial, 3 Subdials, and a Rose Gold Bezel and Bracelet Audemars Piguet , Brand A Guide to Audemars Piguet's Most Collected Watch: The Royal Oak
    February 20, 2026

Audemars Piguet watches have been a staple of the horological industry for nearly two centuries. The watchmaking brand originated in 1875 in the quaint Swiss Village of Le Brassus in Vallée de Joux, north of Geneva. Two young entrepreneurs (and childhood friends) Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet founded Audemars Piguet in 1875. The manufacturer instantly distinguished itself in the watchmaking industry with its Grande Complication pieces, featuring enviable technical capabilities that pushed horological innovation to the next level.

The two made a superb team. Audemars focused on creating complex watch movements to sell to watch manufacturers, while Piguet focused on the regulation of watch movement. Audemars Piguet continues to push the limits of horological creativity, further solidifying the brand as the Master of Watchmaking.

Today, the brand’s most iconic and most collected watch is the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, a 1970s creation that has been rendered a timeless component

  10. Rolex Datejust 28, Stainless Steel, Silver Diamond Dial, Jubilee Bracelet Features Women’s Watches: A Trip Through Time
    February 20, 2026

The story of women’s watches unfolds as a symphony of elegance and refinement, woven with threads of craftsmanship and sophistication. It began when pocket watches adorned the waistcoats of the elite and wristwatches were an emerging concept.

Watches were originally marketed as jewelry for women rather than functional timekeepers. During the early twentieth century, timepieces had art-deco faces, inlays of onyx or marcasite, and straps of black silk or satin. During World War I, soldiers and aviators began strapping pocket watches to their wrists. Because of this, watch brands re-marketed their pieces as a necessity to men’s uniforms to keep an eye on the time, thus shifting their marketing strategies.

This shift did not lead watch companies to stop marketing toward women. Instead, many watch companies adapted their marketing strategies to cater to both men and women. However, WWI largely impacted the perception and acceptance of wristwatches as a practical and masculine accessory.
