Within the world of horology, there are some subtle divisions between classes of watchmakers. At the very top tier of this already elite community, you will find what some refer to as the “Holy Trinity” of watchmaking: three Swiss brands with unparalleled history and renown. The three brands in question are, of course, Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, and Audemars Piguet.

Each of these watchmaking companies brings its own special flair to the horological sphere. Vacheron Constantin, the oldest of the three, was founded in 1755 and now approaches its 300th anniversary. It is the world’s longest standing watchmaking house and has provided impeccable timepieces for some of the most renowned individuals across the globe, from celebrities to world leaders to everyday collectors.

Patek Philippe was founded in 1839 in Geneva, Switzerland, and is quickly approaching its bicentennial. Audemars Piguet was founded in 1875 in Le Brassus, Switzerland. The Royal Oak, a stainless steel sports watch with an octagonal bezel and exposed lugs, set the tone for a new era of watchmaking that followed in the wake of the quartz crisis of the 1970s. The line has set the tone for many watches that have come since, both within Audemars Piguet’s own catalogue and outside of it.

Although these three watch brands may have been dubbed the “Holy Trinity,” they would not stand alone forever. That highest echelon of watchmaking is a coveted spot, and many companies attempted to battle their way there to no avail. But at the turn of the century, one Swiss maison managed the unthinkable.

The year was 1905, and Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law are creating a brand-new watch company in London, England. In 1908, they would move the company to Switzerland and register it under the name we now know and recognize: Rolex. Though some might object to a 20th-century watch company being deemed historical, there is no doubt that Rolex has made an indelible impact on the horological world that deserves to be recognized.

Rolex began as a humble tool watch maker, creating standout professional lines like the Submariner diving watches and the GMT-Master line, which boasted an innovative dual time zone complication. The Daytona, a chronograph watch with motorsports roots, soon followed. Dress lines, like the Datejust and Day-Date, become popular amongst personalities around the world, from prestige collectors to United States presidents.

While Rolex may not be the oldest watchmaker still in production today (that honor goes to Vacheron Constantin), it is nearly impossible to talk about modern horology without discussing the impact of Rolex. For that reason, we consider Rolex a historical standout, and worthy of including in your collection of heritage timepieces.
