Diamonds are renowned across the globe as some of the most exclusive and elite gemstones the world has to offer. Why? They are rare, difficult to mine, and in high demand. In fact, only about 50% of mined diamonds are deemed good enough quality to sell. And at Avi & Co., we are committed to selling only natural diamonds.

That’s right – you have probably heard of the lab-grown diamonds that are making a splash in today’s market. Sure, they are chemically the same… but we think that the history and the unique journey of every true natural diamond matters. A diamond’s journey from a miniscule group of carbon atoms 125 miles beneath the earth’s surface to its discovery as a transparent gem in mines around the world is part of what makes it special.

Diamonds are also appealing due to their natural hardness and durability. On the Mohs Scale, which ranks minerals in terms of relative hardness, diamonds are the only stone that ranks at a perfect 10. Even other highly desirable precious gems, like rubies and sapphires, are not as hard as diamonds. But more than anything, diamonds are loved because of their tradition, heritage, and versatility. A diamond truly goes with any outfit – and when you have the privilege of wearing an eye-catching diamond on your own finger, wrist, or neck, there is nothing quite like the feeling of turning heads whenever you walk into a room.

Diamonds are valued based on four key factors, often called the “4 C’s” – cut, color, clarity, and carat weight…

Cut
The cut of a diamond describes its shape and facets, which is part of what makes it sparkle and catch the light in certain ways. Some common diamond cuts include cushion, princess, oval, emerald, baguette, asscher, radiant, and round. Engagement rings or other pieces of jewelry that highlight large diamonds are particularly good examples of highlighting the differences between each of these cuts.

Color
Many people do not realize that diamonds come in a variety of hues. While white diamonds are perhaps the most well-known, there are a range of other colors available on the spectrum. The most expensive white diamonds are completely transparent in color, while colored diamonds are especially rare and therefore also pricey.

Clarity
Diamond clarity can be impacted by either internal characteristics (called inclusions) or external characteristics (called blemishes). Diamonds without any inclusions or blemishes are rare – however, most of these characteristics require magnification or even a specialized jeweler’s eye to notice. The scale for grading diamond clarity has 11 levels:

  • • Included diamonds: I1, I2, and I3
  • • Slightly included diamonds: SI1 and SI2
  • • Very slightly included diamonds: VS1 and VS2
  • • Very, very slightly included diamondsL VVS1 and VVS2
  • • Internally flawless diamonds: IF
  • • Flawless diamonds: FL
  • Carat
The final measure, carat, refers to the diamond’s physical weight, measured in metric carats. According to Brides magazine, the average carat weight of an engagement ring in the United States is about one carat – this tends to go up in cities and down in rural areas. Older couples are also more likely to invest in larger diamonds. Over time, that average carat weight has been increasing every single year!

As we discuss the striking diamonds that you will find at Avi & Co., it would be remiss not to mention our incredible collection of engagement rings. We have numerous, high-quality engagement rings in stock in our New York City showroom, each of which brings a unique personality and style to the table.

When you are shopping for an engagement ring, remember that you are shopping for a token that signifies the start of your eternal commitment to your partner. Consider their personal style and preferences as well as the aesthetic you want your marriage to embody. Does your partner prefer yellow gold, rose gold, or white gold? What cut of diamond do they gravitate toward? What size diamond looks best on their finger?

You are making an investment in a piece of jewelry that your partner will wear every day for the rest of their lives (once you propose, of course), so this is not the moment to skimp and save. Instead, blow their expectations out of the water with a bold ring that showcases a diamond worthy of all of the love you two will share throughout your lives. Make a statement with an Avi & Co. engagement ring that goes above and beyond.

What Is GIA-Certification… and Why Does It Matter?

You might have heard of GIA-Certified diamonds – and while that term may sound common, it is important to note that not all diamonds are GIA-Certified. If you are shopping for diamond jewelry, however, the GIA designation is crucial to ensure you are purchasing a quality gemstone that will hold its value for years to come.

So what does GIA Certification mean? GIA stands for the Gemological Institute of America, a non-profit organization that provides grading and paperwork to determine and certify diamond quality. A GIA-Certified gem will come with papers that confirm its valuation and grading on those “4 C’s” that we mentioned earlier: clarity, color, cut, and carat.

    A Rainbow of Colored Diamonds

Speaking of the 4 C’s of diamonds… let’s return for a moment to the topic of color. At Avi & Co., we have many pieces of jewelry set with classic white diamonds. However, those are far from the only colors of diamonds you will see in the world – or in our showroom. In fact, we have a number of eye-catching yellow diamond pieces available right now.

In addition to the classic white (transparent) diamond color, diamonds also naturally occur in a range of hues. Most naturally mined diamonds are white, pale yellow, or brown. These are considered the normal color range of diamonds. However, natural diamonds do sometimes occur in other colors such as yellow, red, green, blue, black, or pink. These diamonds are normally called “fancy diamonds” and are graded on a different color scale.

In many cases, the most transparent white diamonds are the most expensive. However, when brightly colored diamonds with especially vibrant hues are discovered, these can garner high prices as well. For instance, consider the Hope Diamond, a 45-carat blue diamond discovered in India in the 17th century.
