Every watch aficionado out there will quickly tell you the name of their favorite watch. Sometimes you will hear a broader category, like a collection, or sometimes you will hear a specific make and model, even down to the year of manufacture. While all of our great horological loves are different, there are a few undeniable timepieces that have shaped pop culture and history alike.
Today, we are going to take a closer look at some of the greatest watches of all time. From the watch that went to the moon to the timepiece that James Bond wore when fighting off evil, these incredible models are memorable, iconic, and infinitely timeless. The only question that remains is, which one will you be rocking?
#1: Rolex Datejust

The 1991 novel American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis, which became the darkly comedic 2000 movie starring Christain Bale, is a bleak commentary on the pitfalls of American consumerism. Patrick Bateman, played by Bale, is an obsessive and competitive New York City investment banker with a secret, grisly habit. The key symbol of Bateman’s wealth and status? A steel and gold Rolex Datejust, which is mentioned repeatedly in Ellis’ novel.
Then, as now, Rolex watches were synonymous with power and money and were almost a requirement if you held a job in the banking or finance industries in Manhattan. If anything, Bale wearing the Datejust in American Psycho underscored the undeniable status symbol that a Rolex has become. Need more proof? Rolex’s other paramount dressy watch line, the Day-Date, has been dubbed the “president’s watch” due to its association with top-tier political figures. There is nothing like a Rolex to showcase your commitment to the finer things in life.
Fun Fact: As you can imagine, Rolex was not thrilled to have their watch associated with such a murderous, evil character. Therefore, American Psycho buffs have determined that the watch Bale actually wore in the film, which was posing as the Datejust, was none other than a Seiko. Still, the message was the same: This is a man who knows how to dress the part.
#2: OMEGA Speedmaster Professional “Moonwatch”

Some wristwatches get their cultural caché from cinematic moments, others get them from major historical milestones. When it comes to the iconic OMEGA Speedmaster, it is a little bit of both. The Speedmaster was the only watch that NASA approved to accompany astronauts to the moon back in 1969, and all three members of the Apollo 11 crew that landed on the lunar surface were sporting OMEGA Speedmaster watches. Since dubbed the “Moonwatch,” this exceptional timepiece has remained a staple of horological culture in the 50+ years since.
As such, it is no surprise that it appeared in the movie Apollo 13, which starred Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and Bill Paxton. The movie documented the true story of a mission by the same name, which challenged this talented crew to push the boundaries of their understanding of outer space. The Speedmaster watch has become a symbol of American progress and success, and it has since been worn on countless red carpets and by numerous official figures (including former president Joe Biden).
#3: Panerai Luminor Marina

We love an underdog success story, and the Panerai Luminor’s rise to fame cannot be described any other way. Although a highly successful watch brand in Italy and other parts of Europe, Panerai had a limited American audience. That is, until Italian-American heartthrob Sylverster Stallone famously wore a Panerai Luminor Marina during his starring role in the 1995 film Daylight. After Stallone rocked this iconic watch, Panerai quickly became a sought-after luxury brand in every hemisphere.
There is no denying this exceptional timepiece’s impact on late 1990s watch culture. At the same time that Friends was dominating the small screen, action-packed films like Daylight were making waves and breaking records in theaters across the country. Stallone’s oversize watch kickstarted a movement toward substantial silhouettes and memorable proportions that continued to dominate for the next decade and beyond. In fact, the supersized “boyfriend watch” trend is coming back in style today!
#4: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore

Speaking of late ‘90s films and oversize watches, we would be remiss not to mention the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore. As he dominated the box office throughout the decade, Arnold Schwarzenegger developed a fascination with these sophisticated Swiss watches. When he scored the leading role in the 1999 film End of Days, he knew he wanted a one-of-a-kind Audemars Piguet timepiece on his wrist throughout the movie. Thus, the Royal Oak Offshore “End of Days” edition, a blacked-out timepiece with yellow accents, was born.
Now, we are going to take a little trip back in time to demonstrate just how significant these larger watch sizes are. Audemars Piguet premiered the stainless steel sports watch back in the 1970s with the original Royal Oak line. While the collection initially raised eyebrows, its immediate market success quickly silenced any haters. The launch of the Royal Oak “Jumbo” was the brand’s first step in the oversize watch direction. Then, in the early 1990s, the company released the Royal Oak Offshore, which was aimed at a younger, more adventurous audience.
Schwarzenegger’s Royal Oak Offshore set the tone for an era of oversized watches that has continued into the modern era. We love the substantial dials of these rugged timepieces and their sportier look that has made Audemars Piguet stand out as a premier horological creator throughout history.
#5: Rolex Submariner

It would be a horological faux pas to talk about iconic watch models without touching on the Rolex Submariner. In a variety of 1960s James Bond movies (think Dr. No, From Russia With Love, and Goldfinger), Sean Connery rocked a classic Rolex Submariner watch. Many Rolex fans are obsessed with the Submariner line in general, but you can win some extra points for getting your hands on a “No Date” Submariner model like the one shown above. This particular watch showcases a slightly smaller 37 mm crown, which evokes the ‘60s-style timepieces that Connery rocked as he fought off international spies and enemies.
The Submariner is also an incredibly versatile and capable watch in its own right, even outside of the exciting associations with James Bond. These timepieces have impressive water resistance and have been linked to some of the most notable underwater expeditions in history, including James Cameron’s adventure to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the deepest known point on the ocean floor. When you rock a Rolex Submariner, you are signaling that your adventurous spirit matches even the likes of James Bond himself.
#6: Richard Mille RM 055

Movies are not the only way that the world’s most iconic watches make a name for themselves. Lately, athletes have been racking up major partnerships with brands like Richard Mille to signify their status and talent without sacrificing on versatility and wearability. Richard Mille watches are known for their high-performance materials, skeletonized dials, and durable straps, making them a top choice for anyone who plans to wear their watch no matter where life takes them. With big names like Rafael Nadal, Charles Leclerc, and Alain Proust representing Richard Mille, there is no question that these timepieces can withstand anything you throw their way.
This specific watch, the RM 055, was created as a collaboration between Richard Mille and professional golfer Bubba Watson, who is known for his bold style and vibrant aesthetics on the fairway. This new-age piece shows off the classic Richard Mille tonneau-shaped and sets a new standard for how sportiness and luxury can go hand in hand. There is no doubt that Richard Mille watches have changed the way we think about luxury timekeeping.
