First Series: The original Daytona watches were manual-winding chronographs. The original Paul Newman Rolex Daytona was also part of the first series, and it helped popularize this watch for years to come.

Second Series: 1988 marks the beginning of the so-called second series of Daytona watches. The brand switched from a manually wound to self-winding movement, though the movement was still driven by Zenith. It was not until the next era that Rolex would bring its illustrious Daytona movement in-house.

Third Series: The start of the Daytona’s third series occurred in 2000, and this was perhaps the most altered modern rendition of the Daytona watch. The most common reference here was the 116520, which had the in-house Rolex movement and was still self-winding. The much-loved Caliber 4130 powered these watches, and bringing all of the engineering and design in-house marked a big change for Rolex.

Fourth Series: In 2016, Rolex made another notable change to its Daytona watches, swapping the steel bezel for a scratch-resistant and durable Cerachrom ceramic bezel. This high-contrast black ceramic bezel was visually distinct from the previous run of Daytonas, and it also led to the watch nicknamed the “Panda,” which is one of the best-selling Daytona watches on the secondary market, perhaps in part due to its resemblance to vintage models.

Fifth Series: Rolex unveiled the fifth generation of its iconic chronograph at the 2023 Watches and Wonders event, showcasing a new reference: the 126500LN. The watch’s design and movement, now the Caliber 4131, received a number of subtle upgrades that have made it more comfortable, powerful, and aesthetically pleasing. The platinum version of this watch was also the first Daytona to offer a sapphire crystal exhibition caseback.
