The Art Basel event is held annually at the Miami Beach Convention Center, and it anchors Miami Art Week with an impressive display of modern pieces from hundreds of galleries. Art Basel Miami attracts international art collectors, fashion lovers, and A-listers alike for its contemporary aesthetic and marvelous selection of invaluable pieces. The Art Basel event was just one of many happenings throughout Magic City this weekend. There were over 20 additional art fairs, gallery and museum exhibitions, and cultural events taking place in the 305 from December 5 through 7 this year. Though it would be a near impossible feat to see everything that Miami Art Week has to offer, there were certainly some staples worth checking out.

The Art Basel event at the Miami Beach Convention Center was the focal point of Miami Art Week. In addition to the main exhibition halls, there are dedicated spaces with themes like “Meridians” (featuring large-scale works), “Survey” (walking visitors through contemporary art chapters of old), and “Nova” (highlighting the newest additions to the contemporary art scene).

Miami has established itself as a thriving art scene, and a selection of galleries from the city itself were featured at the 2025 Art Basel event. Even those who are not official partners, however, benefit from the rosy glow of Art Week. Collectors and denizens from around the world flock to Miami to explore the best of contemporary art, and while they are there, they dine at local restaurants, shop at local boutiques, and stay at regional hotels.

If you are in Miami in the days surrounding Art Basel, one of the best places to visit is the city’s thriving Design District. This vibrant luxury shopping and art hub is home to numerous high-end retailers, including Dior, Prada, Gucci, Hermes, and many others. The Art Basel international art fair is certainly a staple of the Miami Beach social calendar. However, the event first started in Switzerland in the 1970s. Gallerists Ernst Beyeler, Trudl Bruckner, and Balz Hilt created the show with virtually immediate success, as over 16,000 people attended the first rendition in Basel, Switzerland. In the years since, Art Basel has been at the forefront of many contemporary art celebrations and pioneering trends. In the 1980s, the show celebrated 150 years of photography with a 16-gallery display honoring the medium. In the 1990s, Art Basel introduced a spotlight on film and video art. The 2000s brought the Art Unlimited platform, which uncaged contemporary art, inviting in numerous different mediums and innovative displays from artists all over the world.

Nowadays, Art Basel has expanded far beyond its Swiss roots. The first Miami Beach event took place in 2000. The Basel, Switzerland fair retains its place as the group’s flagship event, but there are now also other happenings in Paris, Hong Kong, and Qatar. The addition of the Qatar show, which will debut in 2026, showcases Art Basel’s dedication to expansion. The Persian Gulf, with its incredible opulence and wealth, has long been viewed as a prime opportunity for growth in the art world. Art Basel Qatar will take place in Doha in the M7 creative hub near the city’s prestigious art museum.

Art Basel’s Miami Beach event is not just a celebration of elite contemporary art. Critics observe that it is also a fantastic entry point for many of Miami’s other vibrant artistic disciplines: Think fashion, culture, dance, music, culinary arts, and more. Visitors at Art Basel’s Miami Beach event in 2025 observed some key trends, both in the art on display and the attire of attendees.

Miami is known for its white sand beaches and glitzy nightlife, but it is also renowned for its bold and bright styles. To dress to the nines in Miami is different from the normal reserved urban chic looks you might see in Manhattan, London, or Paris. There is an emphasis on color, patterns, florals, and flair. To that end, accessories are paramount. You can elevate a versatile, neutral outfit with a pop of color on your wrist from a timeless luxury watch. One of the biggest day one sales at Art Basel Miami Beach was an abstract Gerhard Richter painting displayed at the David Zwinter booth. With a list price of $5.5 million, the piece was an impressive showstopper. Richter is known for his loud color combinations and large canvases as well as his unique color mixing techniques, and one lucky buyer scored an instant classic.

A Richter painting is virtually a guaranteed collectible, just like this Richard Mille watch. If you love abstract art, you may also love the color-block effect of this plum, blue, and lavender timepiece. Like Richter’s works, it is pleasantly oversized, clocking in at 46 mm in diameter. The Ingleby Gallery of Edinburgh put together one of the favorite booths at this year’s Art Basel event. The gallery dedicated their booth to the late Antiguian artist Frank Walker, situating his paintings alongside the works of 13 other contemporary artists who admired his style. The works they displayed were intricate and miniature, creating a stark contrast to the open white walls of the booth area. The small yet impactful nature of Walker’s works perfectly aligns with current watch trends favorite miniature timepieces, such as this gorgeous mini Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, pictured here in a “frosted” rose gold:

One of the biggest hits of Art Basel Miami Beach 2025 was found at the Eric Firestone Gallery’s booth. The gallery had the honor of displaying a long-lost Joe Overstreet painting called “Indian Sun.” This uniquely shaped painting offers a burst of vibrant hues, and it was once believed to have been destroyed. In fact, it was only known from a 1970 issue of Time magazine featuring Overstreet’s work. However, “Indian Sun” was recently uncovered hidden away in the artist’s studio, and it got its big debut at this year’s event. The geometric design and bold colors of the painting are the perfect inspiration for a chic contemporary accessory.
