One of the most striking and unusual watches on the market today, the Cartier Crash has skyrocketed in popularity in recent years. In fact, it’s safe to say that the Crash is the watch of the moment. Worn by pop culture icons like Jay-Z, Timothee Chalamet, and Tom Brady, the Cartier Crash is the accessory that everyone is lusting over right now.
So what’s the story behind this modern-day marvel? How did it rise to fame and popularity while breaking horological boundaries at every step along the way? And most importantly, how can you get your hands on a Cartier Crash to add to your collection?
The Legend Behind the Cartier Crash
You may have heard the Cartier Crash watch referred to as the “Dali watch” – or maybe you thought the watch looked like a classic Salvador Dali painting if you noticed it on Sebastian Stan’s wrist at the 2024 Met Gala. You know the painting we’re talking about. It’s that one with all of the clocks that defy physics, folding over and hanging off of different objects.

(If you don’t know the painting we’re talking about, we highly suggest you head over to New York City’s Museum of Modern Art, MoMA, take the elevator up to the fifth floor, and soak in one of the most iconic pieces of surrealist art ever. And while you’re in New York, don’t forget to stop by the Manhattan Avi & Co. boutique to check out our vast selection of luxury timepieces!)
Although the watch’s resemblance to the clocks in Dali’s “The Persistence of Memory” is uncanny, the Cartier Crash was apparently not inspired by the famous 1931 painting. So where did the inspiration for this unusual watch come from?
The Cartier Crash watch first appeared in the 1960s and was a product of Cartier’s London boutique, located on Bond Street. This boutique remains the brand’s flagship United Kingdom location and is renowned as the site where many of the company’s most innovative designs were created. Many attribute the London store’s creative prowess to the influence of Jean-Jacques Cartier, known to those close to him as JJ.
JJ was the youngest of the three Cartier brothers, and he headed the London branch of the company from 1945 to 1974. His career with the family company began with an apprenticeship at the Paris branch, where he leaned into his artistic nature and studied under storied designer Charles Jacqueau. After WWII, he took over the London segment of the company and was well-known in the horological sphere for his influence on some of the brand’s most revolutionary designs, including the JJC (a riff on the classic Cartier Tank) and the Cartier Crash.
Legend has it that JJ was inspired to create the Cartier Crash after a frequent client of his brought a damaged Cartier Baignoire into the London maison. The watch had been crushed and damaged in an automobile accident – but JJ, with his creative mind, saw the damage as beautiful and unusual and determined that he would create a brand-new watch in its likeness.
In the wake of this creative epiphany, JJ created the first-ever watch with an asymmetrical case. The Cartier Crash is meant to symbolize creative freedom and nonconformity, aligning with the values of the Cartier company as a whole, which prides itself on remaining at the forefront of fashion. When the watch was initially released, it was considered quite avant garde – but while some traditionalists wrinkled their noses at this unconventional timepiece, there is no denying that everyone wants a piece of the latest and greatest thing on the market.
As such, a race to snatch the Cartier Crash off the shelves ensued… and frankly, has never quite died down. While the timepiece is a product of the 1960s, its features do not signify the decade. Instead, it transcends the fluctuating and undulating trends of fashion to achieve what every creator dreams of: true timelessness.
Features of the Cartier Crash
Now that we’ve covered the origins of this legendary timepiece, let’s get down to the nitty gritty: the watch’s stats and features. For all of the horological enthusiasts out there, the nuts and bolts of a timepiece are often just as important as the story behind the creation. Here are some of the classic features that you’ll see when you add a Cartier Crash to your collection:
Asymmetrical Case Shape: Of course, the signature of the Cartier Crash is its case shape. Some have described the look as “melted,” but whatever word you choose to describe the look of the watch, there is no denying that it is distinctive and immediately recognizable.
Roman Numeral Hour Markers: While the shape of the watch is unusual and avant garde, Cartier harkens back to classics by sticking to Roman numeral hour markers on these timepieces. The combination of the innovative shape and traditional hour markers is perhaps one part of what makes the watch so fascinating and, yes, timeless.
High-Quality Leather Straps: These watches are typically finished with leather straps of the highest quality. You will normally see the straps in cognac, black, or espresso-colored leather, although some special editions offer interesting variations like a red alligator strap. In later editions of the watch, however, Cartier has also added the option to have a metal bracelet, if you are looking for a glitzier timepiece.
Sword-Shaped Hands: Blue, sword-shaped hands (meaning that the hands are overall straight but end in a point) are a trademark of the Cartier brand. You’ll also see this style of hands on other watches made by the fashion house, including the La Dona De Cartier and the Cartier Ballon Bleu (a favorite of England’s royal family).
Manual Movements: Often, Cartier Crash watches are powered by manual movements, emphasizing the brand’s commitment to traditional craftsmanship and heritage watchmaking. However, the company does make automatic editions of the Cartier Crash today for those who prefer a less labor-intensive timepiece.
Opulent Finishes: The original Cartier Crash timepieces featured cases made from yellow gold or platinum, without diamond accents. As the model became increasingly popular, however, the brand expanded its offerings to include models with diamond-set bezels, adding an extra sparkle and additional opulence and finesse to the already eye-catching watch line. Today, the watch is also available in a rose gold finish, highlighting the popularity of this warm-toned metal.

Why Should You Buy a Cartier Crash Watch?
Cartier Crash watches are legendary for many reasons, including but not limited to their star-studded fan-base, mythical origins, likeness to the famous Dali painting, and their distinctive look. They are highly coveted in the horological world, and it can actually be quite difficult to find Cartier Crash watches that are available for sale.
In fact, many Cartier Crash watches never make it to public consumption. When Cartier releases a new batch of the popular timepiece, VIP customers and celebrities are typically able to get their hands on these masterpieces before they can even be shared with the general public. The hard-to-find nature of these timepieces adds to their incredible value, both monetary and sentimental. To paint a picture, three Cartier Crash watches were among the five most expensive Cartier sales at Sotheby’s in 2024. The three watches were auctioned for prices ranging from $277,000 to $216,000.
While the Cartier Crash is still being manufactured, the limited series production of these pieces add to their value and their difficulty to procure. Luckily, shopping on the secondary market gives collectors the opportunity to find these pieces without jumping through all kinds of hoops when purchasing directly from the manufacturer.
