• Color: The hue of the diamond. While most people imagine opaque or translucent stones when they think of diamonds, these gems can have subtle or noticeable coloring in shades of yellow, pink, blue, or brown.

• Clarity: The level of transparency of the diamond. Is it truly clear? Does it have imperfections, and exactly how microscopic are they? Clarity is graded on a scale with 11 grades, ranging from “flawless” (FL) to “included” (I1 to I3).

• Carat: The weight of the diamond, which is an indication of its size.

All diamonds are fancy, right? In the traditional sense of the word, absolutely. But when it comes to diamonds, the word fancy actually means a diamond with coloring outside the typical range.

Recall that color is one of the four criteria according to which diamonds are described. The traditional diamond color scale accounts for stones on a gamut of translucent to pale yellow, which are labeled using letters D through Z.

Fancy diamonds exist outside this rating system and exhibit unique and vibrant hues like brighter yellows pink, blue, and even green. These stones are less traditional and, in many cases, are extremely rare and unique, especially in larger carat weights.

Fancy diamonds in hues of green, red, orange, and purple are extremely rare. There are very few examples of diamonds in these colors with carat weights large enough to make into jewelry. Diamonds with pink, blue, black, or white coloring are considered rare and highly valuable as well, but they are prevalent enough to be mined and used for jewelry on a regular basis. Some unusually large stones in these colors have been made into famous gems: The Black Orlov diamond, named after a Russian princess, is a whopping 67.5 carats.

Yellow and brown diamonds are considered the most common among fancy diamonds, but they still amount to a relatively small percentage of jewelry when compared with their translucent counterparts. Brown diamonds, also nicknamed “chocolate diamonds,” can be relatively affordable. Yellow diamonds, however, maintain a higher level of status and are frequently seen in high-class jewelry and pieces created with a more vintage look in mind. Because of their rarity and luminosity, yellow diamonds are a favorite of many jewelers around the world.
