Different types of Rolex watches

In the world of luxury watches, there is no question that Rolex holds a place of high esteem. The brand’s numerous models are much-loved among celebrities and watch connoisseurs alike. Since Rolex’s inception in 1905, the company has been producing some of the world’s finest watches, amassing over 15 different lines of timepieces.

With so many types of Rolex watches available, it can be challenging to know where to start as you build your watch collection. Today, we’re going to take a closer look at the brand’s most popular timepieces and dive into the details that separate one line from the next. We hope you will walk away from this article with the know-how you need to make an informed decision about which Rolex you should purchase next.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual might lack the complicated bells and whistles of some of the brand’s more expensive models – but what it lacks in complexity, it makes up for in timeless simplicity and precision. In short, the Oyster Perpetual line fulfills the mission that Rolex initially set out to achieve: precision timekeeping combined with everyday versatility.

Often regarded as an “entry-level” Rolex, the Oyster Perpetual line has been around for nearly 100 years. Its steel construction makes it durable and wearable in every situation, from the boardroom to the beach. With numerous dial colors and styles available, the Oyster Perpetual line also gives wearers the chance to showcase a bit of their own personalities.

This watch is available in a variety of different case sizes, ranging from 31 mm to 41 mm. Save for certain special editions (like the Celebration Dial watch), the line is typically priced under $20,000, making it a reasonable investment to start your watch collection in style.

Rolex Cosmograph Daytona

Perhaps the most iconic Rolex model out there, the Rolex Daytona is an incredible chronograph timepiece that is equipped with a tachymeter bezel and numerous timekeeping subdials including a 30-minute counter and a stop seconds dial. Its three-dial face is instantly recognizable. It was initially created for the world of racing, and is also classic for its most famous wearer: Paul Newman. The Hollywood actor was the veritable face of the Daytona line.

Like all of Rolex’s professional watches, the Daytona is focused on precision timekeeping and offers incredible functionality that goes above and beyond the needs of everyday wearers. However, you don’t have to be on the racetrack to fall in love with the look of the Daytona. These timepieces consistently offer a 40 mm case size, which is the perfect substantial profile without completely overwhelming the wrist.

While the original Daytona models were crafted from stainless steel, the line has now expanded to include some created from precious metals, including 18K white gold, rose gold, and yellow gold. There are even some platinum Rolex Daytona watches on the market today. If you’re looking for a classic Rolex with unmatched chronograph features, the Daytona might just be the perfect addition to your collection.

Rolex Submariner

This quintessential dive watch is a hallmark of Rolex’s repertoire and remains the aspirational model for any diving watches on the market today. Originally launched in 1953, it immediately decimated any competition and became a stalwart member of the brand’s professional line of watches. With its rugged case, unidirectional rotating bezel, and supreme water resistance, the Rolex Submariner can keep up with its wearers on any adventure.

The watch has also become a staple of pop culture and models of different colors have earned tongue-in-cheek nicknames: the “Starbucks” edition, the “Hulk” edition, and the “Cookie Monster” edition stand out in that regard. Case sizes for the Submariner are normally between 40 mm and 41 mm, making it perfect for wearers of any gender.

Many Submariner models feature a date display at the 3 o’clock position with a cyclops lens positioned above it for easier reading. Bold index dials make it easy to tell the time, and 1,000 feet of water resistance means this watch is truly a versatile and functional creation. The 60-minute graduated bezel was created to help divers track their time spent underwater – but nowadays, its aesthetic appeal remains strong even if you’re not planning on wearing it under the sea.

Rolex Deepsea and Rolex Sea-Dweller

If the Rolex Submariner cemented itself as the ideal diving watch, the Rolex Sea-Dweller and Deepsea lines went on to up the ante. Initially, the Deepsea was a sub-component of the Sea-Dweller line, but Rolex recently awarded the watch the honor of its own line designation. So what sets these two watches apart from the classic Submariner line?

The Sea-Dweller launched in 1967 and expanded on the capabilities of the Submariner with an enhanced water resistance of 4,000 feet. The case size of these timepieces is also slightly larger, as the patented Ringlock system that enables this increased water resistance adds a bit of heft to the Sea-Dweller line.

The Rolex Deepsea adds even more water resistance, reaching over 12,000 feet. The blue and black gradient dial has a chromalight display to add legibility. These watches were launched in honor of James Cameron’s solo dive to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the deepest point in the entire sea (at least, that we know of). If you’re searching for a truly elite Rolex professional watch, there is nothing quite like a Rolex Deepsea.

Rolex GMT-Master II

The Rolex GMT-Master line (which has now been replaced by the GMT-Master II line) was the first dual time zone wristwatch. It was created for airline pilots who needed to keep track of the time in two separate locations. The most iconic GMT-Master II watch is probably the “Pepsi” edition, which has a two-tone bezel in red and blue that evokes the soda brand’s logo.

The watch’s trademark, two-tone bidirectional rotating bezel makes the timepiece iconic no matter which color combination you choose. With a readable dial, a date display at the 3 o’clock position, and various Rolex bracelets available to choose from, the GMT-Master II line is an iconic piece of Rolex’s professional collection. The 40 mm case size is most common, and the stainless steel watches in this line evoke the original purpose and ideology of the GMT-Master II (although nowadays, you can also find some pieces made from 18K rose gold or yellow gold).

Rolex Datejust

Now, we leave Rolex’s professional models behind to look at its upscale, aesthetic classics – beginning, of course, with the Rolex Datejust. The watch was released in 1945 to celebrate the brand’s 40th anniversary. In the 80 years since, it has become one of the watchmaker’s most elegant and diverse models, available with a variety of case sizes, metals, and dial features. Even the bezel offers options: you can find smooth, fluted, or diamond-studded.

The Datejust is available in case sizes ranging from 31 mm to 41 mm – and the brand even released a Lady Datejust line that includes petite 28 mm cases perfect for those who prefer a more subdued silhouette. Upon its release, it was the first automatic watch to offer a date window. The prevalence of this feature in today’s luxury watches speaks to how influential this Rolex model really was. If you want an elevated and memorable piece of history in your watch collection, look no further than the Rolex Datejust.

Rolex Day-Date

The Rolex Day-Date marks another historical first for the brand. This watch showcases not only the day of the month, at the 3 o’clock position, but also the written-out day of the week, at the 12 o’clock position. Released in 1956, it quickly skyrocketed in popularity and has become a hallmark of the Rolex collection. This watch is well-known for being loved by people in power, and it has been worn by numerous U.S. presidents.

Like the Datejust, this line primarily showcases a striking fluted bezel that immediately makes its Rolex heritage known. It is available in a variety of metals, but the most iconic look is probably the 18K yellow gold construction with a gold dial – this is the aesthetic favored by presidents and the global elite. Many consider the Day-Date line the “crown jewel” of the Rolex repertoire – no watch collection is complete without this favorite of the rich and famous.
