That’s when the brand now known as Patek Philippe began: in May of 1839, in Geneva, Switzerland. This centuries-old brand remains one of the last family-owned watchmaking houses in the world, and it boasts a legacy like no other. Let’s dive into the company’s timeline of innovation…

1868: Patek Philippe created the first Swiss wristwatch – and it was a ladies’ watch! This timepiece was crafted for the Hungarian Countess Koscowicz and was designed to look like a decorative bracelet featuring a small watch face.

1889: Patek Philippe patents the first perpetual calendar complication. Just 13 years later, in 1902, they would also patent the first double chronograph pocket watch. These patents illustrate the company’s ongoing creativity and technological prowess in the watch world.

1923: Patek Philippe sells the first wristwatch with a split-seconds chronograph, Reference #124824. The timepiece inspired some of their post popular Complications watches today.

1925: Patek Philippe releases the first wristwatch with a perpetual calendar complication. We still see this complication used in pieces the brand sells today in its Grand Complications line.

1932: The brand launches the Calatrava line, which remains in play today and was a favorite of many celebrities, artists, and musicians. In fact, Pablo Picasso was often photographed wearing his Patek Philippe Calatrava watch.

1959: As transportation developments made world travel more and more practical, Patek Philippe secured a leg up by patenting multi-time-zone watches. We continue to see the popularity of these chic timepieces in the brand’s World Time collection.

1968: Patek Philippe launches the Golden Ellipse line.

1976: Patek Philippe releases what may be its most iconic watch: the Patek Philippe Nautilus, a stainless steel sports watch that was a response to the quartz crisis of the late 1960s and 1970s. The Nautilus was designed by Gerald Genta, the same horological genius who created the design for the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch.

1993: Patek Philippe continues innovating with its popular Gondolo line, a collection of square, cushion, and rectangular-faced watches that evoke classical designs.

1997: Patek Philippe builds on the success of the Nautilus line with the launch of the Aquanaut, a rugged, sportier version of the classic “sports watch” look. The Aquanaut preserved the loosely octagonal shape of the Nautilus’ bezel while introducing a more durable and comfortable rubber strap and an adventurous look perfect for a younger, modern watch collector.

1999: Picking up on the growing demand for ladies’ watches, Patek Philippe launched the Twenty~4 collection. These timepieces are the first (and only) pieces in the brand’s repertoire that are marketed exclusively for women. They come in a variety of shapes and colors, but most offer exquisite metal bracelets and diamond accents around the bezels.

While Patek Philippe has released additions to existing collections since the Twenty~4 line premiered in the late 1990s (for instance, the Calatrava Pilot Travel Time or the World Time Chronograph), the Cubitis was immediately special due to its prized position: It is the first new line from the brand in a whopping 25 years.

The brand-new collection perfectly marries the brand’s bold spirit and its elegant tradition. Available in metals including stainless steel, white gold, rose gold, and platinum, the Cubitus presents a new take on the casual chic style that the Nautilus line has been embodying for nearly 50 years. With its distinctive square case and slender profile, the Cubitus ups the ante for horology across the entire globe.

With contrasting polished and brushed satin finishes, it’s clear the details are everything when it comes to the Cubitus line. The dial features a horizontally embossed pattern, which is also reflected on the rotors and mini-rotors of the watch’s movement – a pattern that is expected to become a signature of the newest collection. The cushion-cornered case with polished case flanks evokes the spirit of the Nautilus without the rounding that distinguishes its predecessor.

The aesthetics are not the only factor attracting collectors to this timepiece, however. The Cubitus introduced a brand-new movement years in the making, which required the filing of six new patents – talk about innovation! While a 45 mm watch might feel large these days, as watchmakers are aiming to simplify and cut down their timepieces, the slender profile of the Cubitus collection makes it eminently wearable and flexible. With the addition of two new references to the Cubitus collection at Watches and Wonders 2025, you can now get your hands on a Cubitus with a smaller profile of just 40 mm.

The original release of the Cubitus line introduced three unique references. The stainless steel model of the watch offers a deep green face. It is also available in a two-tone finish with both rose gold and stainless steel used. The two-tone watch has a deep blue face, as does the platinum version. While both steel models have metal bracelets, the platinum watch offers a composite strap in the same color family as its striking blue face.

All three of these finishes were quickly scooped by collectors who could not wait to get their hands on the latest from Patek Philippe – especially since this line has been 25 years in the making! But luckily for Patek Philippe enthusiasts, there were more references on the horizon…

The original three references in the Cubitus line all offered 45 mm case sizes, making them ideal for those looking to evoke the oversize watch trend or anyone with a more substantial wrist. At Watches and Wonders in 2025, however, Patek Philippe introduced some changes to the Cubitus line, premiering two new Cubitus references with 40 mm cases. These sized-down watches are likely intended to appeal to a wider audience and make the timepiece more accessible. Plus, we were treated to two new finishes that are distinctive and elegant.

First up, we have the 18K white gold Cubitus watch, which offers an excellent white metal option for those who prefer precious metals to stainless steel. We love the look of the blue-grey face, which is perfectly accented by index hour markers and a date window at the 3 o’clock position. The integrated bracelet on this watch is timeless and functional, making for a comfortable and durable timepiece that you can pass down for generations. But this timepiece isn’t the only newcomer in the Cubitus line…

Rose gold was present in the collection already in the mixed metals Cubitus watch, where it played off the cooler tones of stainless steel. But now, we have an entirely rose gold Cubitus, which offers a warmer look and an elegant hue. Rose gold is all the rage right now, and the brown sunburst dial on this 40 mm watch adds an element of sophistication and class.

Just 25 days after the new line launched, Robb Report published that the first Patek Philippe Cubitus went up for sale on the secondary market – and it sold for nearly twice its retail price. While some horological enthusiasts and collectors were critical of the piece at first, Patek Philippe President Thierry Stern remained undeterred by negative press. Now, with the watch proving to be incredibly desirable, we can bet that Stern is sitting pretty and reveling in the watch world’s reaction.
