Oversize Watches Aren’t Going Anywhere
As the famed New York Times style section reports, watches with smaller, vintage-inspired faces are getting a lot of buzz right now… but the best-selling and most popular timepieces are still ones with larger dials. For example, former NBA player Dwayne Wade was photographed wearing a Tiffany watch with a dial measuring just 28 mm in October. Clocking in at 6’4”, Wade is a big guy – so this micro sized watch certainly stands out on his larger wrist. Still, the Times shares that most watch shoppers continue to prefer the look of oversize dials.
That said, what a “large” dial really means has changed over time. There is no consistent industry standard to categorize small vs. medium vs. large watch faces – in many cases, these classifications have more to do with current trends than actual measurements. For example, Sylvester Stallone wore a 44 mm Panerai Luminor watch in the 1996 film Daylight. At the time, this watch was revolutionary in its size. But today, case sizes over 50 mm are not uncommon.
Likewise, in the 1970s and 1980s, watch cases in the mid- to high 30 mm range were most common, meaning that dials around 40 mm were standouts. Now, watch world experts report that over 60% of men’s watches sold today fall in the 40 to 41 mm range, and we would probably call these watches “standard” in size. Similarly, the average women’s watch size has increased from between 28 and 31 mm to between 32 and 38 mm – and plenty of women are rocking even larger timepieces in line with the oversize “boyfriend watch” trend.
