(It brought in a whopping $24 million at Sotheby’s in 2014.)

The record holder for the most expensive watch ever sold is also a Patek Philippe – the Grandmaster Chime, to be exact. Considered the most complicated watch ever made, this timepiece was auctioned off for $31 million, funds which went toward researching a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Other contenders are Paul Newman’s Rolex Daytona ($17 million), a huge variety of other rare Patek Philippe watches including the “Tiffany” edition of the Nautilus 5711 ($6.5 million), and the white gold version of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept “Black Panther” watch ($5.2 million).

The Patek Philippe Nautilus line is a hallmark of this renowned Swiss brand – but there are certain reference numbers within the collection that are especially difficult to get your hands on. The perfect example? The Nautilus 5711, a model that was discontinued in 2021. This reference had quickly skyrocketed to popularity and was accompanied by a years-long waitlist. Now, you cannot get a 5711 directly from the manufacturer, making it even more desirable and difficult to obtain. Luckily, Avi & Co. is dedicated to maintaining a stock of Nautilus 5711 pieces to suit all of our customers’ needs.

When Patek Philippe discontinued this popular model, part of their rationale was ensuring that the market did not get too saturated with Nautilus 5711 watches. But now, there is ever-growing competition to find a 5711 and add it to your watch collection. We love the unique look of this 18K rose gold watch with a brown sunburst index dial. The date display at the 3 o’clock position rounds out the face. The brushed, cushion-shaped dial makes the watch immediately recognizable as a classic Patek Philippe Nautilus.

Looking for discontinued watches and watch lines is a great way to get your hands on some unique and rare pieces. The Rolex GMT-Master collection is the perfect example. This line has been discontinued since 1999, paving the way for the newer GMT-Master II line to dominate Rolex’s repertoire of travel watches. However, this means that GMT-Master watches in good condition have become incredibly desirable and coveted by serious Rolex fans.

The perfect example? This gorgeous GMT-Master “Pepsi” edition hailing from 1984:

The Reference #16750 stands out as one of the most important GMT-Master references in Rolex’s history, marking a substantial improvement over its predecessor (the #1675). It introduced the quick-set date feature as well as doubling the water resistance of the previous model to 100 meters, or 330 feet. For anyone looking for a vintage watch that’s made to withstand everyday wear, this Rolex is a no-brainer for your rare watch collection.

The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is perhaps this hallowed Swiss brand’s most famous line. Premiered in the 1970s, it began as a stainless steel sports watch meant to compete with the sportier (and cheaper) Japanese watches taking off in popularity at the time. However, Audemars Piguet never compromised on its price tag – from the get-go, the Royal Oak line remained a luxury investment that was anything but cheap. In the 50+ years since the Royal Oak was first launched at Baselworld in 1972, the brand has added numerous different metals and finishes to the lineup, including this black ceramic watch that is turning heads.

This unique take on the classic Royal Oak has skyrocketed in popularity, making it tricky to find both from the manufacturer and on the secondary market. The lightweight, scratch-resistant ceramic material adds to the comfort and durability of this timepiece, and the chronograph subdials are an attractive and useful complication. Still, this watch is 100% Royal Oak, and is immediately recognizable as such through the octagonal bezel and exposed screws. The sleek profile is the cherry on top of an incredible investment piece.

Richard Mille is a relative newcomer to the watch scene and has been in business since just 2001 – but that hasn’t stopped this ambitious watchmaker from creating some of the rarest and most in-demand pieces in our modern world. The Swiss creator has partnered with an exclusive swath of high-performance athletes, celebrities, and musicians to build what can only be described as a coveted inventory of limited edition timepieces. Getting your hands on one of these celebrated collaborations is truly a feat worth celebrating.
