The price on the tag of a luxury watch is just one of many factors that make it special. Its history, horological impact, legacy, and brand name are a few other considerations. You will also want to look at complications, functionality, and your personal style preferences. But when you are searching for the best of the best, checking out some of the world’s most prestigious (and expensive) watches can be a strong place to get some inspiration.
Pinpointing the most expensive watches ever sold can be a challenge. After all, how do you truly compare those that are auctioned off with those sold at retail price? Although there is some debate about the watches that truly take the crown for the most expensive ever, there are also some standout timepieces that we cannot overlook.
Today, we are going to examine data from the luxury goods auction powerhouse Sotheby’s to share some of the world’s most expensive watches, diving deeper into why they have garnered such incredible prices. Plus, we will share some of the watches we have in stock right now at Avi & Co. that will allow you to evoke the same look without spending $50 million (literally). You are rarely going to find luxury watches “on a budget,” but when you compare an eight-figure watch to a six-figure one, you will see that you still can get an exceptional timepiece without breaking the bank.
#1: Graff Diamonds Hallucination Watch
Reportedly valued at $55 million, the Graff Diamonds Hallucination watch is certainly one of the world’s most elite and expensive timepieces. It was crafted from platinum and is adorned with numerous colorful diamonds in a variety of different hues, each stone meticulously selected for the way it catches the light and sparkles with brilliance.
The good news is that you do not have to spend eight figures in order to get your hands on a gorgeous watch that showcases breathtaking colored stones. Here at Avi & Co., we have a prestigious line of gemstone watches called the Hue Collection, which features a variety of different precious stones: blue sapphire, pink sapphire, red ruby, and green tsavorite. If you are looking to evoke the motif of the famous Graff Diamonds Hallucination watch, we suggest the pink sapphire model, which is available in 37 mm and 44 mm case sizes and is sure to turn heads in any room:

#2: Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime
The Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime, Reference #6300A-010 is well-known for being the most expensive watch ever sold at auction. How much did it bring in? About $31 million, according to Sotheby’s. This special watch is not something you can just scoop up and add to your watch collection, but the good news is that there are other Patek Philippe models that have some similar complications.
If you are looking for a truly elite and complex Patek Philippe watch, consider the Grand Complications line. This collection is the creme de la creme of the Swiss manufacturer’s inventory, and it showcases all of the functionality and complexity you could dream of. For instance, the elite timepiece shown below offers a perpetual calendar, a moon phase display, a monopusher chronograph, and a minute repeater. It is the perfect marriage of form and function.

#3: Rolex Daytona Paul Newman
Sotheby’s auctioned off the limited edition Paul Newman Rolex Daytona watch for $17.75 million. This rare piece is one of the most iconic and sought-after watches for Rolex collectors, and its high price reflects that status. It showcases a vintage Rolex Daytona look, and its connection to actor and motorsports driver Paul Newman has only added to its prestige.
The good news is that you can purchase other Rolex Daytona watches for a fraction of that steep price. The Rolex Daytona line is much-loved by collectors, as it tends to hold its value on the secondary market, making it a strong investment for those looking to use their luxury watches as an asset class. One of the most popular Rolex Daytona models on the secondary market right now is the so-called “Panda” edition, which is crafted from stainless steel and has a black bezel offset by a white face and the three memorable chronograph dials on its face.

#4: Patek Philippe “Prince Mohammed Tewlik A. Tosseau”
One special Patek Philippe watch that belonged to the heir of the founder of modern Egypt also made a strong showing at auction. Housed in a 35 mm rose gold case, the watch showed off a unique salmon-colored dial that is believed to be limited to just 14 pieces. It sold for $9.5 million at Sotheby’s in December 2021. While you cannot purchase this watch exactly, you can find other Patek Philippe Complications models on the market that show off its vintage flair and evoke a similar memorable dial:

#5: Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 Tiffany & Co. Edition
When Patek Philippe discontinued its highly popular Reference #5711 watches, there was a rush among collectors and wannabe owners to get their hands on these elite pieces. This reference went out with a bang, as the brand released a limited edition collection in collaboration with famed jewelry Tiffany & Co. that showed off a dial in classic Tiffany blue. These watches were much loved by celebs, A-listers, and collectors alike, and one was auctioned off for a whopping $6.5 million in December 2021. While the Tiffany blue dial is certainly hard to find, you can get other 5711 watches from Patek Philippe more easily.

#6: Rolex Daytona White Gold “Unicorn” Model
As the name suggests, there was only one of the “Unicorn” model of the Rolex Daytona ever made. It was auctioned off through Phillips in 2018 and sold for $5.9 million. The watch has a few unique qualities, one of which is its white gold construction. In 1970, when the piece was created, Rolex only used yellow gold and stainless steel in the Daytona collection. Thus, it was notable to see a white gold piece hit the shelves. Nowadays, however, you may discover a select few white gold Daytonas on the secondary market, such as this sporty chic option:

#7: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept “Black Panther”
At a private event hosted by comedian Kevin Hart in 2021, an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept watch featuring a 3D figurine of Marvel’s Black Panther hero was sold for $5.2 million as part of a fundraising effort. There were only 250 pieces produced of this fantastical and fun watch, and you can get your hands on one of them at Avi & Co. We suggest making a move before this one gets scooped up by another wily collector, as the market value of this piece has been on the rise following the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman, who starred in the Black Panther movie. If you are collecting other Marvel X Audemars Piguet timepieces, there is also a “Spiderman” watch created in a similar style.

#8: Richard Mille Prototype RM 27-01 Rafael Nadal
In May 2025, a prototype edition of the Richard Mille RM 27-01 Rafael Nadal watch, which hails from 2014, was sold at auction for over 1,270,000 Swiss francs (over $1.5 million). Why was this watch so special? The prototype status helped solidify its high worth, and it is also part of a collection limited to just 50 pieces. Tennis great Rafael Nadal was intimately involved in testing and approving this timepiece to withstand even the most athletic endeavors. Richard Mille is known for high-performance watches and this one is no exception.
Other Rafael Nadal X Richard Mille watches are also highly valuable additions to any watch collection. For instance, check out this gorgeous RM 35-02, which is another Rafa model:
