Who is Richard Mille and how did he create a brand unlike any other?

After years of working in the fine jewelry and watch business in France, Richard Mille wanted to start his own luxury watch company that did not compromise on technique, artistry, or architecture. After some years, Mille went to work with another famous jeweler by name of Mauboussin. Together, they set out to establish Mauboussin's own watch company.

However, Mille was rife with ambition and developed his vision despite becoming an auspicious watch designer himself. Owing to RM's sheer experience in managing and launching meticulous chronographs and beautiful jewelry pieces, he successfully founded his own watch-making company "Richard Mille SA" in 1999, partnering with another legendary Swiss watch brand, Audemars Piguet.

Richard officially introduced his brand in 2001 and launched his first watch, the RM 001 Tourbillon at the global watch platform and trade show, Baselworld. The RM 001 Tourbillon was designed to be extremely lightweight and had powerful shock-absorbing capabilities and was manufactured using next-level componentry and materials, which are typically used in building F1 race cars. The watch also had materials such as NASA-grade titanium. There's no question that RM 001 was a marvel, a first of its kind.

Making expensive watches with a focus on using state-of-the-art materials was not a decision the French watchmaker took impulsively. It was rather an inevitable reality that came from his extensive experience (worth decades) acquired by managing and steering elite watch and jewelry companies in creating and spearheading a variety of high-end projects. Richard developed a powerful sense of fascination with emerging and unique technologies through his love for Formula 1 racing blended with his in-depth and deeply focused sensitivity to watch dynamics, ergonomics, and design. This ultimately meant that, in his view and vision, the watches he would create will be truly one of a kind.

Richard Mille was 50 when he set out to establish his own watch company, with the vision and focus on designing quality and engineering that simply did not exist in the watch industry at the time. Richard introduced unique methodologies and innovations in reinventing modern approaches to watch movements and horology.

You have to understand that Richard Mille is a relatively young company, established in 2001. Typically, it takes several years for luxury and performance watch brands to acquire reputation, acclaim, and popularity on a global scale. However, RM rose to meteoric heights in a fairly short timeframe. Mille had a vision, and it was to push the boundaries of modern watchmaking to incredible horizons – designing something that was truly unheard at the time. And he succeeded quite brilliantly.

Richard Mille's enormous experience, combined with his unique vision, stunning attention to detail, and retaining superior watchmaking standards were all powerful factors that contributed to his success time and again. The Frenchman has garnered an almost cult-like fanbase, creating a roster of some of the most prominent, famous, and powerful brand ambassadors in the world. These are some instrumental elements of his success that led the Richard Mille brand to generate demand and awareness for his watches despite the ridiculously high prices.

One of the best things about Richard Mille watches is that they're astonishingly recognizable. Even from a distance, you'd be able to tell if someone is wearing a Richard Mille watch. This is because Richard Mille watches incorporate unique, tonneau-shaped casings with a sandwich-like design. RM watches are typically made with three decks suspended with titanium bridges. The watches incorporate increasingly difficult hand craftsmanship and expensive materials. The three decks are shaped in curvature and have to be precisely machined with meticulous precision to make the watches dust-free and supremely moisture-resistant.

Richard Mille has invested millions of dollars in research and development. His watches are designed using truly state-of-the-art componentry and materials. These materials are typically used in manufacturing F1 race cars and aerospace structures. He used materials such as carbon nanotubes, reinforced ceramic, silicone nitrate, gold fused quartz and carbon, and NTPT carbon. You'd be amazed to know that one of Richard Mille's watches had a sapphire crystal case that took a mind-numbing 1500 hours to make and involved sapphire machining. All that time and effort for one watch!

Richard Mille introduced innovations in modern horology. The Frenchman reinvented the watchmaking wheel, introducing newer movements that are vastly different from traditional Geneva movements. The parts used in designing these watch movements include a hybrid blend of titanium and reinforced ceramic along with other unique components Mille's expert team of watch designers and micro engineers mastered over the years.

Richard Mille manufactures a little less than 5,000 watches every year. With a low supply and circulation of newer RM editions, it gives rise to powerful levels of demand throughout the globe. The sheer exclusivity and demand for RM watches make them a great investment.

With the launch of RM 005, Richard Mille rose to further acclaim and popularity throughout the world. However, the French watchmaker also knew that the markets will quickly change with tastes leading to demanding considerably bigger cases. This is when the brand launched the RM 010. The watch measured 48 mm x 39.30 mm x 13.84 mm, visibly bigger than the RM 005.

The RM 010 came with similar gear train mechanics, identical to the 005, and featured the same jewel colors. However, the RM 010 was designed to be water-resistant and is the second non-diver RM watch with this capability. The baseplate and bridges of the watch were designed with grade 5 titanium (a cutting-edge material that consists of a blend of vanadium, aluminum, and titanium).

RM 011 was born out of a meticulous collaboration of Richard Mille and 11-time F1 champion, Felipe Masa. Launched in 2007, the 011 is the result of classic Swiss precision and outstanding engineering similar to how F1 cars are designed.

Along with style and extraordinary performance, the RM 011 comes with classic adaptability, excellent movement, and sheer attention to detail, encompassing everything that the Richard Mille brand stands for. The case is tonneau-shaped and features curved sides, a bezel, and a case back. Equipped with a variable geometry rotor, the automatic chronograph also has a reset stop-time functionality and countdown.

Richard Mille launched the RM 11-03 in collaboration with McLaren Automotive in 2018. It was RM's first partnership watch edition, which was introduced to the world at the Geneva International Motor Show in the same year. The 11-03 is an automatic flyback chronograph designed with carbon TPT interlinked with reinforced orange ceramic quartz. The watch is one of the most sophisticated marvels of microengineering and Swiss hand craftsmanship the world had ever seen.

The materials and componentry used to make the watch effortless and lightweight with powerful shock absorbent capabilities. The watch is further mechanically enhanced with carbon TPT and only 500 of these incredible watches were ever made.

RM 030 is built with the company's patented and complex declutching rotor mechanism, which is mainly a sophisticated extension of the torque sensor that all RM Tourbillon watches come with. The watch has a skeletonized automatic winding movement with added features such as a winding indicator, an indicator for power reserve, and a variable geometry rotor for its declutchable system.

The baseplate and bridges of the watch are crafted using grade 5 titanium, which is a combination of three separate materials such as titanium, aluminum, and vanadium. The material is also highly resistant to corrosion and offers superb rigidity, allowing for smooth and uninterrupted gear train movement.

When you look at it from a broader perspective, it becomes easy to realize that you won't get anything quite like an RM watch at a lower price. The components and materials used in designing and manufacturing these watches are extraordinary and unparalleled. This assures RM owners they will have nothing but the best of the best on their wrists. There's a reason why Forbes Magazine calls RM watches "billionaire's handshake". Richard Mille watches are worn by some of the most influential personalities, business moguls, celebrity athletes, and prominent music and film artists, an elite group of wealthy and powerful individuals.

It's going to be rather difficult for you to get your hands on a popular RM watch such as the RM11 or the RM55 at a Richard Mille boutique even if you brought a duffle bag full of cash to make the purchase. Plus, if you're a first-time RM buyer, you may have to wait in line as there's a two-month waitlist attached with every new RM edition. One of the main reasons Richard Mille watches are so expensive is that the brand focuses on creating and maintaining its exclusivity, conveying a message to potential buyers that not everybody will be able to wear one.

So, by wearing a Richard Mille watch, you'll be in a unique position to communicate your status, wealth, success, and influence to others without even speaking one word.
